We tend to get seats 2 or 3 rows back from the exit over the wing so I guess we’re close to being right. My wife feels safer there so perhaps somewhat instinctual. We often get middle seats because it’s just the two of us, so having a stranger in the third seat on the window side, either asking or moving whenever someone needs to get up, is not desirable.
